A posting for a precise location has more credibility

Work location: Various

It is the number 1 criteria for candidates. THE most important, and for a good reason. Not everyone is ready to abandon everything for a job. The majority of candidates are easily more willing to change jobs rather than move to another region, province or country. Some candidates even turn up their noses at the idea of going to the other side of a bridge!

Exceptions are candidates at the start of their career who want to see the world, who have neither a boyfriend/girlfriend, nor a mortgage, wife, children, credit, experience etc… these candidates are possibly willing to move outside a 50km radius. There are also extremely-specialized candidates, those for whom you can count on one hand the number of job offers corresponding to their profile in their region/province/country/planet. Finally, there are those who despair of finding a job and would be ready to settle anywhere for work.

These are rarely the type of candidate employers look for…

However, a significant number of companies pay no attention to this criterion when posting a job on the Internet. It does however, constitute one of the three elements of a job offer on the Internet which are ‘on the surface’, and which serve as ‘bait’. The location, the title of the posting and the name of the company (sometimes the logo) are the only factors on which the candidate will base his/her decision of whether to click and read more of what you have to offer. This decision is made within a fraction of a second. Needless to say it is not wise to create doubt at that moment, as work location can lead to confusion.

Some companies really don’t put all the odds on their side.

Some examples:

Location: Canada
What we call ‘specific’

Location: Quebec
Town or province?

Location: Waterloo
Waterloo in the Cantons, in Ontario or in New Scotland near Bridgewater

Location: Head Office
Is the company known to a point where the entire population knows the location of the Head Office?

Location: 1212 rue Principale
Completely feasible for an internal posting, but relatively useless for an external posting. Mainly in which town?

Location: Vancouver or Montreal
Are there two positions available? Does the company not know what it wants? Is it looking for candidates searching in both Vancouver and Montreal? It would be wiser to have two postings to contact candidates searching in Vancouver and at the same time, those looking in Montreal.

Location: Various
Are there several positions to fill in various locations or does the post necessitate working in various locations?

Location: Various, QC, NB, ON, AB, MB, TN
The message you are sending by doing this is that you have difficulties hiring…or retaining your employees. Not very appealing. It’s better to take time posting the jobs individually.

To summarize: A posting for a precise location has more credibility than postings for jobs in locations which are not very precise….
