By the numbers: 50% of Canadians feel uncomfortable at work

50% of Canadians feel uncomfortable at work

According to a recent IPSOS Reid poll on a sample of 1,013 Canadians, half of working Canadians have trouble fitting in at work, and one in three workers feels dragged down by a negative atmosphere.

The most affected group is 18–34-year-old employees, 12% of whom feel like outsiders, have no attachment to the corporate culture, or hate the mindset. Reasons include more frequent doubt and disappointment by young people in their first job, explains Sean Simpson, IPSOS Reid director of research. “Among those under 35, 28% say their experience is worse than they expected versus just 10 per cent of workers 55 and older.”

The poll highlights the importance of hiring people who are a good match with the corporate culture, and not only those with suitable qualifications. Sean Simpson is adamant that it is essential to select candidates based on their professional skills as well as their personality, personal aspirations and values.
