49% of Canadian companies are limiting employee access to portable computers and USB keys, according to an Ipsos Reid study on behalf of Sun Microsystems of Canada.
Some 30% have also banned MP3 players and the popular iPod. These readers, like USB keys, are true portable hard drives, with increasingly greater storage capacity on smaller and smaller devices. Companies' fears are justified, because in many cases, it is nowadays easier to stroll into their offices with an MP3 player in your pocket than to hack into their network.
The job will become even more difficult with the new-generation cell phones, complete with mind-boggling storage, digital camera and wireless network capabilities.
