Foreign temporary workers: launch of a pilot project in the Yukon

To fulfil seasonal labour needs, the Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Canada has authorized the Yukon to set up a new temporary foreign workers program. The pilot project was launched last August 1 for a one year period and relates to the tourism and hospitality, oil and gas, and mineral exploration and mining sectors. Employers can use the program to bring a foreign worker to the Yukon for a maximum of twelve months, only after having advertised the job for Canadian workers for four weeks. The arrangement is distinguished from the Yukon Immigration Nominee Program which aims for workers intending to reside permanently in the territory.

North American employees lack career prospects

A recent Right Management survey conducted among 400 employees across Canada and the United States shows that 8 employees in 10 (84%) sometimes feel trapped in their current job and would like to get a job somewhere else. Only 16% of those surveyed said they did not hold this opinion at all. Timothy Mooney, chief of talent management practices for Canada at Right Management, believes that these results are true indicators of the work environment and employee engagement. In order to support and remotivate employees, he suggests that managers and staff leaders offer them opportunities for career development, particularly through training and gaining experience.
