An original new campaign for CRHA

The Ordre des conseillers en ressources humaines agréés (CRHA) has just launched a tongue-in-cheek campaign designed to promote the interest of calling on the services of a certified human resources advisor. Instead of success stories aimed at showing by example, the originality of the campaign lies in focusing on the testimonials of ex-CEOs who failed in their missions and admit they should have relied on the advice of HR professionals. Advertising agency Bleublancrouge created the microsite, the posters at Trudeau airport, and the mailing piece, which highlight the risks incurred by CEOs who tried to do everything their way without consulting certified advisors.

For or against the modernization of the Labour Code?

In early February, the Quebec National Assembly’s Committee on Labour and the Economy heard from employer and union representatives along with many experts. The purpose of the work, undertaken following the lockout at the Journal de Montréal, was the potential modernization of the Labour Code, particularly as regards anti-strikebreaking provisions. Created in 1977, these provisions no longer correspond to the realities of today’s work world. The rest of Canada has already enacted legislation in this regard: resorting to permanent strikebreakers is forbidden in Manitoba and Prince Edward Island, volunteer replacement workers are banned in British Columbia, while Ontario also forbids the use of professional strikebreakers.

Official Spanish retirement age increases from 65 to 67 in Spain

If the reform approved by the unions is passed by Parliament, the official retirement age in Spain should increase from 65 to 67 years of age. Furthermore, the number of years of contribution will increase from 35 to 37 years for a fully funded retirement, and the calculation of pension entitlements will be based on the last 25 years of work rather than the last 15 years. To do this, the system will be reformed in increments between 2013 and 2027. This measure has been proposed as part of an austerity plan put in place by the government to reassure international markets on the state of Spanish public finances.

New Brunswick to recognize foreign qualifications faster

The process of recognizing the diplomas and experience of foreign workers has just been speeded up in New Brunswick. According to Martine Coulombe, Minister of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour, this choice will be positive for both foreign professionals and the province—the former will be integrated more easily, while New Brunswick will benefit from more qualified labour. As part of this project, a version specific to New Brunswick of the Working in Canada site will be launched to make the most recent job market information available to newcomers. The federal government will invest $1.2 million to support the project.
