Is the CV obsolete?

Absolutelynot, but while the content remains relevant, the form is blossoming. Over thepast few years, the traditional CV has been replaced by the “folder”that candidates can conscientiously upload to an employer’s career section orjob board. Although the process is laborious the first time, it allows you toreuse your folder for each job you apply to (be sure to remember your password).

WithWeb 2.0, many vocal and video CVs and even blogs-as-CVs have seen the light ofday. And while such initiatives attract attention, they are still notwidespread. Business social networking sites (e.g. LinkedIn or Viadeo to namejust the largest) also provide for entering a “mini CV.” Is itpossible to get a job via a social network? Not quite—such sites confirm informationabout a candidate or employer, but do not really affect the traditionalselection process, which always starts with the sending of a CV.

Finally, the following are some innovative services that have been launched in betaversions which could allow candidates to maintain appealing electronic CVs forattracting the attention of employers.

VisualCV: ThisCalifornia-based site lets you create a CV based on an existing electronicversion in Word, pdf, or other format, and to enhance it with pictures, video, graphics, presentations or examples of work. Once the CV is created, candidatescan send it directly to the site’s employer database, tailoring the content foreach employer by means of filters. The basic service is free, with a fee forthe advanced service. Employers can also perform CV searches.
