Mental health programs, Hiring students or young graduates

Inadequate mental health programs?

While over 90% of Canadian companies believe that mental health is fundamental in their well-being and health strategy, only 22% think that the actions they have implemented in this area are appropriate for their needs. This is what a Ceridian study has found. Although in the past a good mental health program was limited to assisting employees with problems, today prevention is at the centre of the issues. Thus, for three quarters of Canadian employers, the next step is to identify measures to take in terms of prevention solutions such as training (a priority for 50% of people interviewed), awareness programs (43%) and specialised consultations to help managers understand mental health problems (43%).

One company out of two plans to hire students or young graduates

51% of Canadian companies plan to recruit students or young graduates this year, according to a BMO study. More specifically, 30% of them plan to hire a student for the summer and 21% intend to integrate a young graduate into their workforce full time. These result vary by sector of activity. Employers in the service and manufacturing sectors are the most likely to hire a summer student (35%), followed by agricultural employers. The manufacturing industry is where employers remain the most open to hiring a young graduate full time (25%), closely followed by those in the service sector (24%).
