Adjudicators manage a high volume of claims in a timely manner by determining entitlement on disability claims in accordance with the Workers' Compensation Act and policies and communicate decisions to all relevant stakeholders. Focusing on making balanced and accurate decisions, while always treating clients with respect and fairness, Adjudicators are responsible for assessing and facilitating access to the appropriate benefits and services to restore injured workers to date of employment accident or transfer claims for Case Management to deliver more detailed Return to Work services.

Your responsibilities:

  • Demonstrating problem solving and critical thinking when determining the relationship between mechanism of injury and diagnosis by gathering and analyzing relevant information and planning to facilitate a return to work.
  • Obtaining medical opinion as required and coordinating or authorizing medical investigation treatment.
  • Establishing compensation rates, determining the appropriate wage replacement benefits payable and determining medical aid and non-rate based entitlements.
  • Maintaining a caseload while meeting department standards and expectations.
  • Provide a high level of customer service to all stakeholders, and act as an educator and negotiator when managing stakeholders' expectations.
  • Determining entitlement of medical and financial benefits.
  • Upholding the values and principles of the Alberta Workers' Compensation Board.

Your experience and skills:

  • A degree or diploma preferably in Social Sciences, Rehabilitation or Business with related experience in caseload management in the areas of making entitlement decisions, medical management of claims, health care experience, vocational rehabilitation experience or employment counseling experience an asset.
  • Ability to build credible business relationships with stakeholders and to reach agreement on courses of action will be key aspects of this role.
  • Ability to learn quickly, a strong record of personal achievement, are goal oriented and have solid decision-making and planning skills.
  • Reliability and excellent time management skills are critical to this position.
  • Proficient computer knowledge and keyboarding skills are essential.
  • Familiarity with medical or rehabilitative terminology would be an asset.
  • The ability to understand and apply policy while understanding the need for creative problem solving, critical thinking and flexibility to make fair and accurate decisions in a timely manner.
  • Effective communication skills - active listening, collaboration and effective verbal and written communication skills will lead to your success.

Salary: Pay Grade 9 Start Rate: $66,547 to Job Rate: $75,173 per annum

Our next Adjudicator class will start on February 3, 2025. Please note successful candidates must be available to attend ten (10) weeks of training at the time of hire. This position is eligible for hybrid; however, successful candidates will be expected to work in-office as scheduled (subject to change). Assessments will be administered as part of the selection process.
