WHAT WILL YOU DO

Reporting to the General Manager, SMS Safety, the Corporate Safety Advisor will support the oversight of the Authority's safety programs and act as a subject matter expert with a strong focus on delivering OH&S program initiatives. This includes OH&S incident investigation for YYC Crew and contractors, root cause analysis, corrective action development, regulatory compliance, risk/hazard assessments, worksite inspections and supporting Workplace Health and Safety Committees.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES

• Conduct comprehensive safety investigations under the Occupational Health & Safety and Contractor Safety Programs, collaborating with YYC Crew, contractors, and tenants to address incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
• Establish and communicate investigative conclusions and review and approve corrective actions from tenants, contractors, and YYC management.
• For significant safety events, establish findings, conduct root cause analysis, approve containment and corrective actions, and monitor closing actions for long-term effectiveness.
• Ensure ongoing regulatory compliance with the Canada Labour Code Part II, Canada Health and Safety Regulations, and the Alberta Occupational Health & Safety Act through the performance of their investigative duties, as per Safety Management System requirements and regulation.
• Conduct regular safety inspections at construction sites and work areas to identify potential hazards, non-compliance with safety regulations, and unsafe practices.
• Maintain accurate and comprehensive records of safety inspections and safety-related documentation.
• Liaise with leadership on action items to ensure hazardous conditions are addressed in a timely manner.
• Attend all Workplace Health and Safety Meetings to provide insight, advice and recognition to action items as required.
• Schedule and direct detailed monthly workplace inspections with Authority management and workplace health and safety representatives.
• Document and track action items to ensure follow up.
• Conflict resolution between Committee members when required.
• Administer the Calgary Airport Authority's ISNetworld (ISN) account, ensuring that:
  • All active contractors are compliant with safety requirements
  • Contractor information and incident reporting details submitted through Site Tracker are maintained and up to date
  • Monitoring of contractor performance and compliance through ISN, providing regular reports to YYC contract owners as required
  • Regular meetings with ISN team to further develop contractor safety oversight and data metrics to enhance safety performance.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING

• The ability to gain and maintain a RAIC (RAIC Program and Application Information)
• Post-secondary education in safety, environmental, or similar is preferred, but 6+ years of professional equivalent experience (e.g. Certified Occupational Health & Safety Practitioner) may be considered.
• 3+ years related industry experience in the areas of OH&S, hazard identification/control, workplace inspections, accident investigations, safety investigations, compliance and enforcement, risk and root cause analysis, or safety program management.
• CRSP Canadian Registered Safety Professional or working toward designation or similar designation (e.g., CSP, NCSO) preferred.
• Proven ability to make decisions on risk tolerability and develop corrective actions that directly address identified findings and root causes.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively convey safety-related information to diverse audiences.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team, effectively managing both safety and administrative responsibilities.
• Intermediate to advanced technical computer skills in Microsoft Office products with a firm understanding of design, layout and graphics through Word.
• In-depth knowledge of Canadian construction safety regulations, codes, and practices, staying current with updates and amendments in the Canadian safety landscape.
• Proficiency in utilizing safety software and tools commonly used for inspections, reporting, and administrative tasks, ensuring compliance with Canadian safety requirements and efficient data management.
• Thorough knowledge of Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Act (sections applicable to 'owners' responsibilities, sections required for advising Authority staff who manage employees under the Alberta OH&S Act)
• Extensive understanding of Canada Labour Code Part Two and Criminal Code of Canada (as related to workplace health and safety).
• Demonstrable understanding of safety investigations, root cause analysis, findings and effective corrective action plan development.
• Must possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Driver's License or equivalent, subject to a clean driver's abstract.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a RAIC (Restricted Area Identification Card) & AVOP (Airside Vehicle Operating Permit).
