Job Description

Reporting to the Manager, Reliability Requirements and Market Support, we are looking for an Engineer or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) to join our Grid Reliability team, The engineer or EIT in this role will contribute to various projects as the AESO's needs evolve. The ideal applicant will be comfortable performing engineering studies, developing software, and providing technical support for projects wherein we will develop tools and systems to enhance grid reliability. We have a strong preference for candidates familiar with dynamic and EMT modeling and studies. Strong technical communications skills are essential.

Accountabilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform dynamic or transient power system studies to investigate reliability risks.

  • Perform studies to assess the need for ancillary services.

  • Perform studies and assessments related to compliance with rules and standards.

  • Review, develop, validate, and enhance dynamic, EMT, and other models needed for tools and studies.

  • Automate engineering studies using Python.

  • Contribute to tools that monitor or control the performance of the grid, as part of a project team, potentially involving needs assessment, systems design, modeling, analysis, and implementation.

  • Review and respond to asset connection requests, test reports, and applications to provide ancillary services.

  • Understand and interpret the ISO Rules, Alberta Reliability Standards, and associated information documents within the scope of Operations Engineering.

  • Meet with market participants to discuss AESO's reliability concerns.

  • Comply with AESO policies including health and safety, internal compliance, provision of information related to authoritative documents, records management, and others.

What you'll bring to us:

  • B. Sc., M.Sc., or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or a related field (graduate degree preferred).

  • Registered with APEGA as a Professional Engineer or EIT, or eligible for registration.

  • 2 to 5 years experience, especially in the electricity industry.

  • Experience in Computer programming, using Python, and especially in a power system context is considered as an asset.

  • Experience with PSS/E or other power system simulation tools.
