PURPOSE OF THE POSITION:

In the role as a Manager - Safety, you will be responsible leading, managing, advising and supporting the Field Safety Team. Team is responsible for providing field safety support, risk strategy implementation, program development and compliance management for the required Operations department. These efforts will also support the CP Safety Management System and align with safety and regulatory requirements.

POSITION ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Lead & manage the Field Safety Team to deliver a variety of safety programs, activities and initiatives; including, but not limited to: monthly scorecards, quarterly trending sheets, safety rule development and management, risk mitigation strategy, safety culture transformation, risk assessments and audits, training course development and compliance management
  • Deliver timely, meaningful information to the Managing Director of Safety to support corporate and departmental strategies by recognizing and analyzing key performance drivers and data, business trends, and emerging technical and industry developments
  • Lead cross-functional fields teams to ensure timely, accurate, and effective process of the identified key performance drivers
  • Assist in development of both corporate and functional safety plans for each calendar year and supervise safety performance within the Engineering and Mechanical operating departments
  • Provide leadership and training in the investigation of all safety incidents (Incident Drill Downs)
  • Train and mentor frontline, middle, and senior management in safety leadership standard methodologies.
  • Represent CP when meeting with external regulators (Transport Canada/Employment and Social
  • Development of Canada/Federal Railroad Administration/Occupational Safety Health Agency)
  • Delegate work successfully and conduct timely performance reviews and provide performance feedback/training

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess post-secondary education, or equivalent experience preferably in the safety field
  • Proven demonstrated ability in railroad operations or related field
  • Interest in working with various computer programs (SAP, FIORI, and Microsoft Office)
  • Practical knowledge of internal and external safety programs and regulations, US and Canada
  • Strong leadership and mentoring abilities. Ability to establish a team environment and develop collaboration
  • Possess a strong proven understanding of operating practices and rules (e.g. CROR, GCOR, GOI)
  • Must possess a valid driver's license
  • Must have a valid Passport and be able to work and travel internationally (Canada, US, Mexico)
  • On call 24/7
  • Safety experience preferred
  • Experience working in a unionized environment preferred
  • Project Management experience will be considered an asset
  • Health & safety training curriculum development preferred
  • Qualified conductor/engineer is considered an asset

Management Conductor Program:

Becoming a qualified conductor or locomotive engineer is the single best way for a management employee to learn the business at CPKC. You may be required to obtain a certification or to maintain your current certification/qualification as a conductor or locomotive engineer.
