ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a summer student to join us for a 3-4 month temporary position to gain hands-on experience in Performance and Reliablity Engineering with TransAlta Corporation at our head office in Calgary, AB.
The successful candidate for this role will drive improvements in TransAlta's wind power fleet by researching, documenting, and benchmarking major component failure rates. This role will work with TransAlta central and field teams in the generation business unit, as well as an industry research and collaboration group (EPRI) to understand how TransAlta's major component failure rates impact our capital planning and maintenance practices. Additionally, the candidate will have development opportunities including technical training in reliability modeling, collaboration with EPRI, an industry expert group, and visits to TransAlta's wind control center and wind sites.
This is a full-time, temporary position of 3-4 months, with an ideal start date of April or May 2025. This role is based out of our head office in downtown Calgary, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.
WHAT YOU WILL DO
Role specific accountabilities
Work with wind plant managers to collect past failure information
Streamline TransAlta wind's major component failure process including benchmarking
Work with Electrical Power Research Initiative (EPRI) to benchmark
Consolidate data from various sources including input to SAP
Create reliability models / calculations to predict spares budget
Research alternative major component failure benchmarks and models
Develop process for improved future major component tracking
Cross-functional accountabilities
Support EPRI initiatives including wind major component tracking and turbine bolting project
Interface with Work Management team to understand major component tracking in the context of Work Management processes
Prepare and present results of major component failure rates analysis and actions
Support Asset Information team with storage of appropriate records in the appropriate systems
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU
Currently enrolled in a university or college degree Engineering program (any specialty)
Interest and knowledge of the power generation sector
Interest in reliability engineering
Proficient in core office programs (i.e.: MS office) and capable of learning key position specific applications.
Functional in at least one computer or scripting language
