WHAT WILL YOU DO

Reporting to the Manager, Airside Safety you will be responsible to ensure airside operators comply with Calgary Airport Authority Airside Traffic Directives. Safety Compliance Officers are first and foremost safety educators, where enforcement is used as a last resort to ensure compliance. In addition to compliance monitoring, Safety Compliance Officers conduct investigations into airside safety incidents according to the Calgary Airport Authority's Safety Management System (SMS) and support Airside Vehicle Operator's Permit (AVOP) testing as required.

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Patrol the entire airfield, including all aprons, roads and buildings regularly accessed by AVOP holders, unless otherwise directed by the Manager, Airside Safety or Manager, Operations - Airports (MOA). Patrols include:
    • Airside Traffic Directive Enforcement - Monitoring and/or ticketing for compliance with all Airside Traffic Directives policies and procedures.
    • Safety Violations:
    • Unsafe parking
    • Blocked emergency exits, fire extinguishers, fuel shut-off valves, etc.
    • FOD removal
    • Use of high visibility Vests
  • Identification of any hazards to safe operation on the airfield, inclusive of vehicle and aircraft traffic, with the ability and expectation to immediately correct as may be necessary.
  • Observe and report to the IOC any damage to YYC property or equipment, or any notable safety or security issues at the time of discovery (or as soon as possible)
  • Provide complete, accurate and comprehensive documentation for all AVOP Violations and Aviation Safety reports. This is conducted in accordance with the Airside Safety Management System Manual, Investigations Handbook and Safety Compliance Program Manual.
  • Conduct investigation and follow-up on all aviation safety concerns and Airside Traffic Directives violations:
  • Obtains and reviews employee, air traffic control, and weather data
  • Ensures investigation actions are accurately documented in the AVOP database and Company Safety Database
  • Recommends, tracks, and verifies the effectiveness of corrective action plans
  • Notifies the person managing the Safety Management System and responsible department manager(s) if a regulatory violation is discovered during an investigation.
  • Track, document and provide Airside Traffic Directive and aviation safety statistics (monthly, quarterly & annually).
  • Communicate with airfield operators regarding Airside Traffic Directive and aviation safety policies and procedures.
  • Cross-train to act in relief of AVOP Tester as operationally required.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO BRING

  • The ability to gain and maintain a RAIC (RAIC Program and Application Information)
  • Post-secondary education in safety, environmental, or similar is preferred, but professional equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Minimum 3+ years' experience in aviation safety in the areas of Safety Management Systems, hazard identification/control, workplace inspections, accident investigations, safety investigations, compliance and enforcement, risk and root cause analysis, or safety program management.
  • Experience conducting safety investigations, documenting/reporting incidents, conducting root cause analysis, and developing corrective action plans.
  • Experience enforcing compliance with procedures, standards, and policies.
  • Knowledge of airside areas, aircraft traffic, and vehicle operations.
  • Must be able to hold a RAIC, D AVOP, and ROC-A.
  • Understanding of Canadian Aviation Regulations, Aeronautics Act, Aerodrome Standards and Recommended Practices TP312, Criminal Code of Canada, Canada Labor Code and Airport Traffic Regulations.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills for reporting, documentation and comprehension of manuals.
  • Must demonstrate safe driving skills and safe operation of a vehicle, including proof of clean driver's abstract.
  • This role is considered safety sensitive and will require a pre-employment drug and alcohol test through a third-party provider.
  • Proficiency in Word, Outlook, Adobe, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams.
  • Ability to comprehend duties & responsibilities associated with each AVOP type (to provide appropriate training & testing)
  • Ability to multitask with high alertness to provide driver training and conduct AVOP testing on the airfield.

  • Previous training or teaching experience is an asset.
