Position Summary:

Reporting to the Plant Manager, the Health and Safety Specialist is accountable for the implementation and monitoring of processes and practices to achieve a safe work environment. This includes providing occupational health and safety advice to the plant staff to facilitate compliance with occupational health and safety legislation, guidelines, and standards to support the plant's safety program and initiatives.

Key Accountabilities:

  1. Provide guidance and technical support to plant management regarding specific issues relative to health & safety programs and policies;
  2. Accountable for the facilitation and monitoring of the Plant Safety Program to eliminate the risks causing workplace incidents and injuries.
  3. Accountable for the facilitation and monitoring of a safe work environment for employees, contractors, and visitors.
  4. Accountable for identifying trends and areas of improvement and communicating with plant management.
  5. Accountable for identifying, developing, & delivering the health & safety training requirements for the workforce.
  6. Conduct audits to ensure safe plant's operations, facilitating corrective actions with plant management as necessary.
  7. Collect and analyze statistical data pertaining to the plant's safety and health program. Prepare various reports to support various health and safety initiatives.
  8. Support the claims/case management requirements of the facility, as required and at the direction of Sofina's claims professionals.
  9. Coordinate and facilitate any WCB/WSIB proactive/program initiatives, as directed.
  10. Provide ongoing support/participation to the Joint Health & Safety Committee.
  11. Participate in corporate health & safety initiatives (such as conference calls, audits, etc.) to ensure site representation, inclusion, and consistency.

Requirements:

  • Certification from a recognized Occupational Health & Safety program, in the process of obtaining certification or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • 2-3 years' experience in a similar role.
  • Knowledge of applicable Provincial/State safety legislation and regulation, Occupational Health and Safety standards is required.
  • Valid Advanced First Aid Certificate or Emergency Medical Technician Certification is an asset.
