At SMS Equipment, our Safety Trainers support SMS Equipment’s safety goals by understanding its unique requirements and implementing programs that meet customer, OHSE, and regulatory standards. The Trainer also develops and delivers training materials to enhance the company’s safety culture and initiatives. This position is based in Fort McMurray, AB.

The shift rotation for this position is 5x2.

The salary for this position is $100,000 - $120,000 dependent on experience.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Develop and maintain in-depth safety knowledge. Keep up to date with safety legislative requirements and certifications. Coordinate with OHSE Advisors to ensure all end-users exercise safe procedures and practices and collaborate with the business to ensure new requirements are met prior to effective date.

  • Design and deliver adult-focused training: Assemble, coordinate, and deliver adult-oriented safety training courses, workshops, and seminars that encourage engagement and application of learning to real-world tasks. Identify training and development needs of employees. Determine training and development costs and benefits while controlling costs against budgets. Work with external training consultants and internal resources to identify course objectives and content. Assess application of learning to job performance and recommend future training and development. Use Adult Learning Theory to craft training materials that are relevant, practical, and engaging for adult learners, promoting long-term retention and skill development.

  • Comfortable speaking to large groups, with the ability to confidently present complex safety concepts and training materials to diverse audiences in a clear, engaging, and understandable manner. Skilled in managing group dynamics and fostering an inclusive environment that encourages participation and learning. Additionally, proactively requests course kits from ESC, creates and submits certificates to employees, ESC, and the corporate training group. Generates and analyzes reports to assess training needs, collaborating with internal stakeholders to improve training effectiveness.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will possess a Train the Trainer certification for relevant Alberta Occupational Health and Safety requirements and OSSA and ESC approved safety training courses. Other requirements include:

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in developing and delivering safety training courses specifically designed for adult learners.
  • A strong understanding of Adult Learning Theory, with the ability to create training experiences that cater to the diverse learning styles of adult learners.
  • Knowledge of the mining and construction industries, with the ability to design industry-relevant safety training
  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to engage adult learners and clearly articulate information in a manner suited to diverse audiences.
  • Energy Safety Canada training is an asset.
  • Intermediate computer skills with proficiency Microsoft Office applications.
  • High attention to detail and compliance.
  • Ability to assess whether learning outcomes have been achieved by the learners.
