We are looking for a Human Resources (HR) Advisor to join our team at a large, unionized aluminum smelter environment in Kitimat, BC, with approximately 1,100 employees. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in supporting a dynamic workforce, navigating the complexities of labour relations, and contributing to the smooth operation of a critical manufacturing facility.

Reporting to the HR Team Lead and working on a Monday-to-Friday schedule, you will play a key role in ensuring effective HR operations, by:

  • Building effective and collaborative relationships with union representatives to promote team building and minimize workplace conflicts.
  • Managing the grievance process, including resolution and arbitration, while maintaining a proactive approach to addressing concerns.
  • Providing expert guidance and ensuring compliance with the terms of the collective agreement, employment legislation, and safety programs.
  • Supporting collective bargaining preparations and implementing of labour agreements.
  • Providing leaders with the tools, training, and resources needed to enhance their team management skills. Serve as a trusted advisor to employees, addressing workplace concerns and ensuring alignment with HR policies and practices.
  • Delivering coaching and guidance to leaders on employee relations, conflict resolution, and engagement strategies, while ensuring compliance with provincial and federal labour laws and HR policies.
  • Collaborating with HR Business Partners and site leadership to implement HR initiatives that align with business priorities, while fostering global HR best practices and cross-regional collaboration.
  • Leading HR projects to improve processes, drive efficiency, and integrate global HR best practices, ensuring alignment with broader People Experience and HR strategies.

What you'll bring

  • A commitment to the safety of yourself and your team
  • A bachelor's degree in human resources, labour relations, business administration, or a related field.
  • Over 5 years of progressive HR experience, specializing in labour relations.
  • Proven experience in grievance management, collective agreement implementation, and union collaboration.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective relationships at all organizational levels.
  • In-depth knowledge of provincial and federal labour laws, along with HR compliance requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead projects, drive change, and achieve results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with HRIS systems (e.g., Workday) is a plus.

The base salary range for this role is $98,560 - $147,840 CAD in addition to allowances, bonus, equity, health or retirement benefits, and any other discretionary benefits offered at Rio Tinto. Our base salary ranges are based on role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by the skills, experience, and impact you bring to the role.
