Detailed Overview

Under general supervision, the Therapy Assistant assists the Therapists in implementing programs to meet the needs of residents/patients, as well as the performance of tasks within Residential Care.
Responsibilities

  1. Assists therapist in organizing, preparing and implementing therapeutic programs for assigned residents/patients.
  2. Participates in resident/patient activities of daily living by demonstrating and assisting with self-care and meal-management.
  3. Assists with resident/patient mobility including provision of appropriate wheelchair seating by obtaining and adjusting equipment, strengthening exercises, walking programs and transfer to/from bed and chair.
  4. Assists in fabrication of splints and adaptive devices as well as modification of patient clothing, self care and eating utensils.
  5. Reports relevant observations concerning resident/patient''s progress and condition to other care team members.
  6. Completes statistics and records program information as required.
  7. Maintains an inventory of equipment, supplies and wheelchairs on loan to patients; notifies senior therapist when inventory is low.
  8. Keeps work area tidy by performing specific duties such as cleaning, storing and tidying.
  9. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

Completion of a Rehabilitation Assistant Program or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to deal with others effectively.
  • Physical ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Ability to organize work.
  • Ability to operate related equipment.
