Who can apply? Fraser Health LPN employees and external LPN applicants who meet the following criteria:
- Current active practicing or provisional registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM)
- Current CPR certification
- Commit to a comprehensive education program
- A commitment to a minimum of 18 month regular full-time or part-time FH employment in the specialty area upon successful completion of the program
- An agreement to attend an orientation session at an educational institution
- An agreement to travel to an appropriate site/campus and to clinical practice areas (mileage reimbursement per HEABC/ BCNU Letter of Understanding on Specialty Education)
- An agreement to allow the education institution to release student progress information (complete/ incomplete/ withdrawn) to the FH Specialty Education division of Professional Practice
The Royal Columbian Hospital redevelopment project is well underway with phase two slated to open in 2025, and phase three in 2026.
Highlights for the three-phase redevelopment project include:
- A new and larger Emergency Department will have more treatment spaces and a satellite medical imaging unit
- More operating rooms and interventional radiology and cardiac suites on a surgical and interventional ‘superfloor’

Through this comprehensive training based on the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) curriculum, you’ll gain expertise in scrub and circulating roles. Detailed Overview
Under the direction of the Manager, Clinical Operations or designate and in collaboration as a member of a multidisciplinary team; performs assessments, plans, implements and evaluates nursing care. The LPN operates in accordance with the competency guidelines and full scope of practice within the Standards of Practice as outlined by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM), and according to agency operating policies and standards and unit specific protocols.
The purpose of this position is to provide qualified Licenced Practical Nurses the opportunity to consolidate their skills by rotating through a specialty nursing unit(s) prior to and/or during the undertaking of post graduate course work applicable to the relevant specialty nursing unit(s). As such, successful applicants will be expected to participate in and successfully complete the applicable post graduate specialty nursing courses/program within the agreed-to time frames.
Responsibilities
- Assesses patient/resident/family’s actual and potential strengths and limitations including physiological, psychological, socio-cultural, and spiritual needs.
- Provides a supportive environment for patient/resident/family. Promotes patient/resident/family involvement in health care decisions; provides information and opportunity to discuss concerns; respects personal choices.
- Contributes to the development and ongoing changes to the individualized plan of care, including attending and providing input into multidisciplinary care planning meetings and family conferences.
- Provides nursing care according to identified policies and procedures, technology and Fraser Health standards and evaluates outcomes. Records observations and reports problems and/or changes to designated staff.
- Performs admissions, discharges, and transfers of patients/residents according to agency operating policies and procedures.
- Documents and updates all relevant care and procedure information to ensure patient/resident safety and comfort.
- Operates and maintains effective functioning equipment related to patient/resident care such as bathtubs, scales and mechanical lifts.
- Assists in maintaining a safe and clean environment for patients/residents and staff.
- Assists in the orientation of new staff, students and other members of the Health Care Team.
- Participates in continuous quality improvement and program evaluation activities, education sessions, team conferences, meetings and committees.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education, Training & Experience
Graduate of a recognized practical nursing program or equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Current practicing registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
Completion of the applicable post graduate specialty practical nursing course/program and/or willingness to complete the applicable post graduate specialty practical nursing courses/program.
Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS).
Skills & Abilities
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to deal with others effectively.
- Ability to organize work and implement a plan of care.
- Knowledge and competencies to work at full scope of practice as currently required by the BCCNM, including administering medications.
- Ability to operate related equipment.
