SUMMARY:

Reporting to the Vice President, People, the Director, People will proactively lead the development and implementation of human resource strategies, programs and plans to support annual corporate business plans for Canucks Sports & Entertainment (CSE) and its sister company, Toptable Group (Toptable). He/she will provide operational oversight for the People team and senior level expertise primarily in the areas of labour relations, recruitment and onboarding, immigration, training and development, performance management, employee benefits and will provide advice and guidance to management and staff on human resource matters. As a seasoned human resources professional, this position will act as 2/IC to the Vice President, People.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (other duties and special projects may be assigned as required)

  • Working collaboratively with the VP, People, contributes to the development of the annual People Business Plan and leads the development and execution of departmental goals and objectives that fall within their area of responsibility.
  • Proactively drives the development and execution of new, competitive and creative human resource strategies, programs and initiatives in recruitment and onboarding, employee experience, retention and recognition, training and development, benefits administration and performance management, putting priority and urgency on areas requiring special attention
  • Leads, mentors and motivates employees of the People Department in day-to-day operations fostering an environment that is conducive to a collaborative, high-performance/highly motivated team, quality initiatives and continuous improvement
  • Investigates and handles to conclusion, what are sometimes complex complaints submitted to the People Department (e.g. harassment, human rights, union grievances etc.)
  • Provides advice and expertise to CSE, AG and Toptable management on handling difficult performance issues and offers labour relations expertise to CSE managers on the application of the Collective Agreement
  • Works with VP, People to drive the company's internal Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and Respectful Workplace education
  • Oversees the management of immigration applications including Labour Market Impact Assessments (LMIA) for CSE and Toptable employees, ensuring utmost attention and compliance to application process
  • In collaboration with other People leaders, proactively creates and strives to exceed KPI'S that drive continuous improvements in all aspects of HR (e.g. attraction, recruitment, retention, performance etc.) with a passion to raise the bar every year
  • Collaborates with the VP, People in the collective bargaining process including preparation of employer proposals and responses to union submissions and sitting on the management bargaining committee, and may act as spokesperson at collective bargaining. Represents the Company on other labour/management committees, in late-stage grievance resolution, labour arbitration cases and other related labour relations matters. Proactively fosters harmonious union/management relations.
  • Develops and delivers various training and onboarding sessions for new and existing employees
  • Provides back-up support to the VP, People and other People leaders in their absence
  • Serves as a committed and responsible member of the company's Leadership Team

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A degree in Human Resource Management or a directly related field
  • A senior Human Resource professional with 10 years' progressive HR leadership experience, with at least 5 years in a senior capacity, and experience in a hospitality and/or sports & entertainment industry preferred
  • Senior level expertise in all aspects of HR including but not limited to employee & labour relations, training & development, recruitment, immigration, benefits administration, conducting investigations
  • Demonstrated experience developing and implementing creative, best-in-class HR strategies and programs
  • A strong working knowledge, experience with and interest in using HR data and HR technologies to add value to the role (e.g. business intelligence, social media, MS Office applications etc.)
  • Demonstrated experience successfully collaborating with Unions and extensive experience dealing with complex Union and employee relations issues
  • A detailed, proactive, inquisitive individual who faces challenges head on with tenacity and determination
  • Brings expertise, energy, enthusiasm and passion to motivate, inspire, develop and connect all employees of the People team
  • A team player with a strong client service focus
  • Solid interpersonal and communication skills with a demonstrated ability to interact effectively with diverse clients
  • Ability to demonstrate sensitivity, objectivity, confidentiality, good judgment, and professionalism when handling complex HR issues
  • A self-starter who is proactive in putting thought, creativity, and ingenuity into work assignments
  • Approaches problem solving in a practical, client-centered manner, always with an urgency to resolve thoroughly and in a timely manner
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple projects quickly, efficiently and accurately
