POSITION: Organizational Development Specialist

STATUS: Temporary; Full-Time (1 year)

SHIFT: Monday to Friday - 8:30 am to 4:30 pm

LOCATION: Provincial Office - Vancouver, BC - Hybrid (2 days required in the office)

Reporting directly to the Chief People Officer, this position collaborates with leaders and teams across the organization to guide change management efforts in the implementation of the BC SPCA's strategic directions and priorities. The Organizational Development Specialist consults, coaches and partners with leaders on customized initiatives to support department and organizational needs, especially as it relates to people. This includes providing support for new and existing teams in integrating the BC SPCA values in their everyday ways of working, identifying opportunities/barriers to the successful implementation of the strategic imperatives, suggesting (and in some cases delivering) training/teambuilding initiatives, and leading/participating in other projects aimed at enhancing the employee and volunteer experience.

This position is a member of the People Services team and regularly works cross-functionally with other departments and leadership to improve overall organizational effectiveness.

This position will be part of our Provincial Office team based in Vancouver but qualifies for a hybrid work arrangement with a minimum of two (2) days/week in the office.

Some specific duties:

Strategic Planning Implementation (60%):

    • Provides input into analysis and implementation of organizational strategy/structure from all angles -especially training and development, organizational culture and change management perspectives.
    • Ensures consultation and engagement is done in way that is in keeping with the BC SPCA's values and Foundational Principles for Equity, Diversity and Reconciliation; may provide recommendations to enhance this aspect of consultation.
  • Drafts change management plans in partnership with Department Heads and other leaders. Provides input into communication and implementation strategies/plans and liaises with Internal Communications Specialist as requested.
  • Provides recommendations on best practices and practical solutions for monitoring and measuring organization-wide and team-level progress against the strategic plan; including providing input on improving current data collection and reporting mechanisms.
  • Coaches leaders on execution and evaluation of strategic plan initiatives within the units they are responsible for and how to increase engagement of their teams in the strategic directions identified.

Operational Excellence (20%):

  • Assists the Chief People Officer with effective ways of tracking, measuring and monitoring people-related initiatives.
  • Partners with the Senior Director, Governance & Executive Operations and Executive on any change management required for policy development and implementation.
    • Collaborates with the Senior Director, Human Resources and Senior Director, Volunteer Resources to identify trends in recurring people issues that impact organizational effectiveness and make recommendations to Chief People Officer to address these.
    • Analyzes and provides recommendations on internal people-related processes such as annual organizational priority setting, 360 feedback mechanisms, and performance planning and review forms.
    • May participate in the development and administration of employee and volunteer engagement surveys, as required.
    • May mediate cases of employee or volunteer interpersonal conflict, as required.
    • Contributes to the growth of a culture of health and safety and volunteerism.
    • Demonstrates a commitment to BC SPCA values, work-life balance, and principles of equity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation.

Leadership Development (20%):

  • Partners with the Training & Development Specialist to manage the BC SPCA's Leadership Development Program(s).
  • Provides 1:1 coaching to mid-level and front-line leaders, as requested and approved.
  • Assists in planning and delivery of Leadership Development Days as required and if time allows provided above-noted duties are on track.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications you need to have:

  • University degree Business Administration, Organizational Development, or related discipline plus 8-10 years' related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience acceptable to the Employer.
  • Related experience includes but is not limited to:
    • Group consultation/facilitation
    • Equity, diversity and reconciliation concepts
    • Up to organization-level change management
    • Conflict management and resolution
    • Systems dynamics and systems theory
    • Program assessment and evaluation
    • Leadership coaching and development
    • Strategic plan implementation
  • Previous experience working in a nonprofit, multi-location and/or unionized environment would be considered an asset.
  • Excellent communication, public speaking and facilitation skills and ability to work with internal and external parties at all levels and from diverse backgrounds in a positive, respectful and non-judgmental manner.
  • Strategic and creative thinker with a strong focus on process and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize work, meet priorities and to work within a demanding work schedule with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to use technology effectively.
  • Ability to travel within British Columbia.
  • Strong business acumen.
  • Emotional intelligence and high level of comfort with change/conflict and experience leading groups through complex change processes.
  • Working knowledge of concepts of equity, diversity, inclusion and reconciliation; able to relate respectfully to a diverse audience.
  • Philosophical harmony with the vision, mission, values and strategic directions of the BC SPCA.
