Technical Architect, Web Performance

Shopify's mission is to make commerce better for everyone. A Technical Architect (WebPerf) makes commerce better for everyone by making storefronts faster, bounce less and convert more.

Technical Architects have deep specialization in Web Performance. They engage with the most important merchants on the platform providing sound direction, proof of concepts, and/or advice on how to speed up stores. Working with new and existing merchants, Technical Architects provide in-depth expertise in both long term projects and shorter term engagements.

This role offers the opportunity to work directly with merchants as well as shaping the future of the Professional Services Team. A technical architect should take learnings from merchant engagements and take them back to the platform. They should identify larger opportunities for performance gains and use their powers of persuasion to get them added to product roadmaps.

The Technical Architect role includes partnering with several internal teams such as Product, Engineering, Merchant Success, and Sales. Great communication skills are essential.

Your Responsibilities

• Support our global merchant base by speeding up their stores as part of paid engagements

• Help build the WebPerf professional service practice

• Provide merchants with best practice advice and direction based on your expertise

• Scale learnings from engagements to make Shopify better for all merchants

• Create thought leadership content to demonstrate expertise on https://performance.shopify.com/

• Manage stakeholder expectations throughout engagements

• Provide ad-hoc technical and product feedback to various internal teams

• Engage with both technical and non-technical merchant stakeholders

WebPerf Specific Experience

• Experience of improving front end performance on large websites is a must have

• Expert level of experience in performance debugging using DevTools, WebPageTest, RUM solutions

• Comfortable navigating and using GitHub

• Comfortable sharing their knowledge through speaking engagements and writing blogs

• Should enjoy investigating and solving complex performance issues

• REACT/Remix experience is an advantage but not necessary

• Experience with Liquid or Shopify storefronts is a bonus
