Job Profile:

Lions Housing Centres Inc. is recruiting a Health and Safety Coordinator within our Human Resources department. This position is responsible for ensuring the organization is in compliance with legal guidelines and preventing accidents, injuries, and work-related illnesses. This role involves developing and implementing health and safety plans, training checklists, enforcing policies, evaluating practices and facilities, and analyzing workplace hazards or stresses. The incumbent will provide advise to Executive and Senior Management on all health and safety matters. This position reports to the Director of Human Resources.

Job Responsibilities:

Advisory Role

  • Provide advise to executive and senior management on health and safety matters.
  • Provide guidance on compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Recommend improvements to existing health and safety practices.

Policy Development and Implementation:

  • Develop and implement health and safety policies and safe work procedures.
  • Ensure policies comply with current legal guidelines and best practices.
  • Enforce health and safety policies across the organization.

Risk Assessment and Hazard Analysis:

  • Conduct regular risk assessments and safety inspections.
  • Analyze, identify, and measure workplace hazards or stresses.
  • Conduct job hazard analysis.
  • Recommend and monitor corrective actions to mitigate risks.

Training and Education:

  • Organize and conduct health and safety training sessions for employees.
  • Assist department leads in developing training checklist in compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Ensure employees are aware of and adhere to safety procedures and protocols.
  • Coordinate and ensure applicable employees are trained in the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS).
  • Maintain training records and documentation.

Compliance and Reporting:

  • Ensure compliance with provincial and federal health and safety regulations.
  • Prepare and submit required health and safety reports.
  • Investigate accidents and incidents, and report findings to management.
  • Maintain and ensure all Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) are current.
  • Submit workplace injury claims to Workers Compensation Board.

Return to Work process

  • Facilitate return to work accommodations in accordance with legislations, company policies and procedures, and collective agreements in consultation with Director of Human Resources and Managers.

Emergency Preparedness:

  • Develop and maintain emergency response plans.
  • Coordinate emergency drills and training.
  • Ensure emergency equipment is maintained and functional.

Health and Safety Audits:

  • Conduct internal health and safety audits.
  • Assist in external health and safety audits and inspections.
  • Implement audit recommendations and corrective actions.

Employee Wellness:

  • Promote and implement health and wellness programs.
  • Provide resources and support for employee well-being.
  • Monitor workplace ergonomics and recommend improvements.

Professionalism

  • Maintains confidentiality in all matters pertaining to residents, staff and facility operations
  • Practices in a manner that supports the Respectful Workplace Policy, the Resident Bill of Rights, and Lions Housing Centres Inc. Mission, Vision and Values
  • Participates in mandatory trainings/annual education required by employment legislations and the organization.
  • Work collaboratively with all staff as required.
  • Adheres to and implements company policies and procedures.

Your education and qualifications:

Education:

Post Secondary Education in a Health and Safety program.

Working knowledge of Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health Act and Workers Compensation Board Act

Certification in health and safety is preferred.

Experience:

Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in a health and safety role.

Experience in Healthcare environment (Long Term Care) is an asset.

Experience working in a unionized environment is an asset.

Experience in conducting risk assessments and safety training.

Skills and Competencies:

Strong knowledge of health and safety regulations and standards.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Promotes effective working relationships among team members.

Works collaboratively with all employees.

Ability to conduct training and presentations.

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
