Job Summary
Dalhousie University's People and Culture team strives to ensure Dalhousie's people and culture goals and core values are aligned and fully embedded across the institution so that all members of the university community feel included, motivated, and supported to excel in their careers and in advancing the mission of the university. Reporting to the Director, Total Compensation and Human Resources Information Services, the Manager, Compensation and Benefits will lead the day-to-day activities of the Compensation, Benefits and Job Design units to provide expert advice to all levels of the university and to consult with senior leaders across the institution to develop relevant plans.
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the compensation side of "total compensation" being mindful of all aspects of total compensation to effectively guide and advise leaders and managers. Research, advise on and approve requests for market differentials and other salary compensation methods outside of annual assigned salaries.
  • Provide strategic direction for all benefit plans, ensuring programs are equitable, meet employee needs, comply with all legal requirements, and are cost effective. Evaluate existing benefit offerings to determine appropriateness and competitiveness in relation to peer organizations.
  • Ensure effective and timely application of the university-wide job evaluation programs for unionized and non-unionized positions. Work closely with university leaders and managers to address their operational and strategic needs via work organization, advising on the job evaluation implications of proposed changes.
  • Develop and recommend relevant policies and procedures, taking into account applicable collective agreements, handbooks, university policies, and best practices, and collaborating with the Director and pertinent committees as appropriate. Research and analyze data and trends to facilitate program development and ensure competitive practices.
  • Serve as a compensation and benefits resource for labour relations and collective bargaining processes. Act as chair of the joint employer/union job evaluation committees.
  • Manage staff members as well as temporary, casual and student staff.
Note
The successful applicant will be eligible for hybrid work (combination of in-person work on campus and remote work) as agreed by all parties based on operational requirements and university guidelines.
Required Qualifications
  • Undergraduate degree in relevant field such as Business Administration (Human Resources) or Public Administration plus at least seven years previous experience in human resources consulting, with a focus on compensation and/or benefits (or equivalent combination of training and experience).
  • Human resources experience in a unionized work environment.
  • Excellent relationship-building, interpersonal, and communication (verbal, written and presentation) skills.
  • Strong collaboration and problem-solving ability with proven sound judgement.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large portfolios and balance competing priorities.

Assets
  • Relevant advanced degree or certification such as Advanced Certificate in Human Resource Management, MBA, MIR.
  • CPHR designation.
