Job Profile

The City of Cambridge is currently accepting resumes within the Community Development Department, Recreation & Culture Division for casual Program Assistants - Aging at Home Program. This unionized position is available immediately.

What you will be doing

  • Assists the Programmer to plan, and implement program activities, outings and special events to meet the needs and interests of the program participants.

  • Assists the Programmer with the administrative or clerical aspects of the Day Services programs as required.

  • Contacts participants, verifies attendance and arranges transportation in co-operation with transit providers on a daily basis.

  • Sets and cleans up program areas and rooms for activities and assists the Programmer to decorate program areas for holidays and special events. Maintains tidy program areas.

  • Greets & assists participants at the door of the Day Services site when they arrive or leave.

  • Assists participants with personal care, e.g. toileting, dressing, medication reminders, transfers from wheelchairs, heavy lifting, etc. as required ensuring the safety and comfort of participants.

  • Organizes, sets up and cleans up dining and kitchen areas in preparation for and following meals and snacks.

  • Liaises with Cook and/or kitchen staff at various program sites to order meals according to specific needs of participants. Prepares and serves snacks and meals. Purchases food and beverage supplies as required for off-site programs. Transports food supplies from food source/supplier to program sites and ensures safe storage, handling and reheating/cooling of food.

  • Assists the Cook and/or volunteers with the preparation and serving of morning and afternoon snacks and the serving of the noon hour meal.

  • Assists participants at mealtimes to cut food or with feeding as required.

  • Maintains appropriate records/documentation, attendance and client progress notes.

  • Keeps crafts and activity supplies neat and orderly and maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment. Transports program supplies between site locations as required.

  • Follows policies and procedures to ensure personal safety and the health and safety of program staff, students, volunteers, participants and visitors at all site locations.

Education

Possession of a College level diploma (two years) in Recreation and Leisure, Gerontology, or a related field, or equivalent.

Experience and Knowledge

One to two years' previous related work experience implementing activation and recreation programs in a group or one-to-one basis with individuals who are frail and/or developmentally, cognitively or physically impaired, living with chronic disease or mental health issues, or other populations with special needs.

Language: Bilingual (English and French) is considered an important asset. A second language such as Portuguese, Hindi, German, Spanish in addition to English or French is also desirable.

Proof of your current and valid certificate(s) and/or educational qualifications.
Valid G driver's license.
Standard First Aid, CPR C & AED certification
Worker Health and Safety Awareness Training Certificate from the Ministry of Labour

Your compensation

The hourly wage is within the inside workers union salary scale Job Grade 6 $35.24 per hour.

Hours of work

Current scheduled or call-in shifts and hours may vary in length, days and location and be scheduled between 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m., Monday to Saturday according to vacation bookings or sick replacement.
