SUMMARY:

This position is responsible for assisting, providing guidance and training to Distribution Centres and Office management and staff on health and safety matters to help eliminate and control risks; establish compliance; reduce the frequency and severity of incidents; and promote health and safety awareness and a healthy workplace.

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Identify hazards in the workplace and recommend measures to help protect workers from potentially hazardous work methods, processes, or materials.

- Inspect or evaluate workplace environments, equipment, or practices to ensure compliance with safety standards and government regulations.

- Provide direction and support to operations, particularly Supervisors, as they execute their safety obligations including responding to inquiries, providing instruction, training and/or working with Operational Leaders to provide them with skills to be more effective.

- Support Joint Health & Safety Committees by providing information and training on workplace inspections, terms of reference and the completion of JHSC meeting minutes.

- Collaborate with the Health and Safety Committees to further develop skills for more effectiveness in their daily responsibilities.

- Assist in the investigation of accidents and incidents to identify root causes and to determine how they can be prevented in the future.

- Assist in the design, creation, and implementation of H&S training materials and programs.

- Oversee administration and maintenance of H&S training records and database.

- Assist operations with providing powered equipment training and manage related documentation.

- Assist with new-employee health and safety orientations and further develop materials for presentations.

- Participate in the development and/or revision of standards and procedures to manage the Safety Management System.

- Identify and analyze OHS trends for opportunities to implement improvements.

- Complete reports of findings on accident investigations, assessments or other subjects as requested.

- Identify opportunities for service or process improvements and make recommendations to the Manager, Health & Safety.

- Assist in determining key OHS performance indicators and support the operation with achieving our key safety targets and business plan objectives on an ongoing basis.

- Respond to emergencies including after hours, when required.

- Assist in representing management in matters of health and safety with government, health and safety associations and other outside agencies and organizations.

- Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

- College diploma or University studies (certificate).

- Current Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) preferred.

- Health & Safety: 3 - 5 years of relevant experience in a Distribution Centre environment.

- Strong organizational, communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to share information across all levels of the organization.

- Work within a Unionized environment preferred.

- Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint and comfortable with systems and other in-house OH&S tools.

- Results driven and proactive with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment while maintaining high attention to detail.
