Discover Impactful Work:

The Senior EHS Specialist & Industrial Hygienist will provide mentorship and support to EHS Specialists I, II, internal and external clients on EHS matters. Provide EHS support to the team, operations, and Pharmaceutical Development Services (PDS). Ensure the site is in compliance with EHS regulations and practices. Develop standard processes for the site and shares standard processes and expertise with other sites.

A day in the Life:

  • Conduct incident investigations, JHSC audit finding closures, risk assessments, department specific training.
  • Provide client & auditor support and environmental support.
  • Complete the national pollutant release inventory (NPRI) report.
  • Ship dangerous goods following the regulations and provides mentorship to employees.
  • Lead hazardous waste management program, waste water discharge program ensuring compliance with Sewer Use By-Law, and New Substance Notification Regulations (NSNR) program, designated Substances Program, and Industrial & Office Ergonomics program
  • Coordinate pre-start health and safety review completion. Conduct equipment reviews.
  • Development of safety programs such as lock out and machine guarding.
  • Provide Industrial Hygiene (IH) Support, lead all facets of the IH Program at the site.
  • Conduct Industrial Hygiene assessments on existing products and evaluates technologies to improve containment.
  • Development of Occupational Exposure Limits (OELs) and IH analytical methods.
  • Development of IH sampling plans and sampling strategies.
  • Make recommendations for improving containment and engineering controls.
  • Participate in work-teams to evaluate containment of existing processes and implements containment plans.
  • Develop and Implement EHS Programs and EHS trainings. Provide mentorship and back- up to other EH&S team members and Health Centre.
  • Develop audit protocols, audits programs, procedures and practices for the EHS Programs.
  • New Project Risk Assessments. Attend Kick-Off Meetings and ongoing Project Meetings. Evaluate containment/industrial hygiene for new projects.
  • Potent Compound active-specific procedures and training.
  • Liaise with Project Managers, Process Engineers and Clients.
  • Review and update the respiratory protection program. Support Fit Testing.
  • Implement Positive Air Pressure Respirator (PAPR) maintenance and testing programs.
  • Assist in selection and use of respiratory protection, protective clothing, hearing protection and safety glasses.
  • Perform alternating or rotating shift work, as needed.

Keys to Success:

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in related field
  • EHS Certificate or Diploma
  • Working towards a Professional Designation -Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH)

Experience

  • 5+ years of previous EHS, Industrial Hygiene training, and Chemical, manufacturing, or pharmaceutical work experience.
  • Equivalent combinations of education, training, and meaningful work experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Able to work in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Previous experience conducting presentations / training.
  • High integrity for handling confidential information.
  • Effective interpersonal skills.
  • Computer proficiency with Microsoft Office programs. Proficiency with the English Language.

Physical Requirements / Work Environment

Light physical effort and fatigue. Walks, sits, or stands for limited periods. May require occasional equipment operation including keyboard equipment. Lifts light items for limited duration. Typically located in a comfortable indoor area. There may be regular exposure to mild physical discomfort from factors such as dust, fumes or odours, temperature extremes, loud noise, strong drafts, or bright lights. Use of Personal Protective equipment may be required and may include any of the following: safety glasses, safety shoes, lab coat, gloves, hair net, beard cover, safety apron, respirator on occasionally.
