Intermediate Systems Engineer - Victoria-Class Trainer

Position Summary

Thales Canada Defence & Security is working with other companies to revitalize the simulators for the Victoria-class submarines used by the Royal Canadian Navy. These trainers for submarine and machinery controls provide realistic environments for individual or collective training augmented by motion, water, sound, and smoke. With the instructor able to control the system and inject faults for the students to find and correct, these training systems allow for the safe and effective preparation for emergencies without endangering lives or critical shipboard systems.

You will join the Systems Engineering team located in Ottawa, Canada and be expected to provide engineering support to the upgrade of the existing systems in a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment.

Key Areas of Responsibility

In their efforts to develop and sustain mission systems, Systems Engineers are called upon to integrate a variety of sensors, software, firmware, and apps on commercial and military platforms. The essential functions and responsibilities of a Systems Engineer include:

  • Tailor the system engineering process, practices and tools;
  • Provide timely and accurate status updates;
  • Develop the preliminary and detailed designs for system and subsystem elements;
  • Review and validate internal and subcontractor designs, plans, and schedules;
  • Identify, characterize, and describe issues in the system or its design through problem reports and document and design reviews;
  • Author technical documentation to capture the system and subsystem designs including the architecture, interfaces, and installation elements;
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure the designs are consistent with needs, desires, and concerns of the end-users;
  • Support the development of verification and validation artifacts including plans and procedures;
  • Collaborate with other functions during the implementation and integration of the system and subsystem designs;
  • Resolution of technical issues arising during the implementation, integration and testing of the system and subsystem elements;
  • Support the installation and/or integration testing of the systems remotely or on customer site; and/or
  • Technical subcontract management including management of work scope and compliance of the (subcontractor) supplied solution;

For this specific project, typical duties will include:

  • Generating/contributing to work estimates and progress reviews for contract tasks;
  • Performing Impact Analyses and recommendations relating to technology refresh;
  • Interface Definition;
  • Planning, authoring, and executing integration and acceptance tests; and
  • Test automation through tools and scripts.

Minimum Requirements

  • 3 to 6 years of professional experience in the design and integration of complex systems in commercial and/or military domains.
  • Ability to succeed in cross-functional/multidisciplinary teams.
  • University or college degree in engineering or a related discipline.

Preferred Qualifications

In addition to the minimum professional experience specified above, experience in any of the following areas would be considered an asset:

  • Shipboard, Maritime, or Sub-Surface Systems; Simulators / Trainers; Windows Configuration / Maintenance; Powershell; DDS or similar publish/subscribe communication models; C++; Basic familiarity with IP Networking; Scripting languages;

Physical Demands

  • Minimal lifting of test and electronic equipment, connecting equipment in a lab environment or job site.

Special Position Requirements

  • Hybrid - 3 days a week onsite;
  • Full time, standard business hours. Some on-site work required in the lab. Possibility of travel to customer site for technical support / installation.
