JOB OVERVIEW

Ontario Power Generation (OPG) is looking for a dynamic, strategic and results-driven professional to join our team in the role of Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Shift Operations Manager in Training.


Reporting to the Director, Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Plant Operations, this position oversees the activities of all work groups on shift and ensures that all operations are conducted in a manner consistent with Legal Codes & Standards, and OPG nuclear processes. This includes overseeing activities to ensure that standards regarding nuclear safety, worker safety, public safety, environmental protection, station operation and maintenance are met.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

  • As the senior licensed manager on shift, this role is accountable for safe operation of all reactor units under normal and transient conditions as directed by the Power Reactor Operating License.
  • Manage emergency incidents in accordance with Nuclear governing documents and emergency procedures in an accurate and timely manner. This includes establishing a Joint Incident Command to coordinate the work of internal and external work groups. Provide technical expertise and assistance to government personnel, agency staff, and contractors.
  • Establishes and manages station priorities. As required, liaison with other Plant work groups including maintenance and engineering, to resolve issues that impact plant safety and prevent the completion of station priorities.
  • Conducts training, drills and evaluations. Assess and correct team performance to improve the level of performance in human errors, personal safety, radiation exposure, conventional safety, productivity and staff development. Develop and provide oversight of improvement plans when gaps in standards are observed.
  • Upon receipt of a Nuclear certification, successfully perform all training and testing to maintain the certification in an active state.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Grade 12 with 3 Grade 12 University Prep academic courses in Math, Physics and Chemistry, OR
  • Grade 12 or equivalent and 2 years of study in a related field, OR Certificate of Qualification in a relevant trade
  • Experience in an operational organization
  • Prior experience in supervisory or managerial roles is highly valued.
  • Technical Knowledge and aptitude
  • Strong leadership skills, effective communication, and the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.

The base salary range considers many factors including, but not limited to experience, education, and training, including any collective agreement requirements for union represented positions. It is not typical for the salary to be offered near the top of the range, and salary is dependent on numerous factors. For management roles, the base salary range does not represent the total compensation package. The total compensation package for regular full-time management roles includes pay-for-performance programs for annual and medium time periods.
