The Role:

We are seeking a Health and Safety Director to lead and elevate our safety programs across projects in Ottawa and Kingston. In this pivotal role, you will oversee a team of six employees in Health & Safety, Locates, and Environmental Compliance while guiding over 200 site staff across approximately 40 diverse project sites each year. Your leadership will ensure compliance with COR 2020 standards, drive continuous improvement in safety initiatives, and foster a culture of accountability, care, and operational excellence.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Compliance:
    • Maintain compliance with COR 2020 certification and oversee the Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).
    • Develop, review, and implement OHSMS policies and ensure training programs are delivered effectively.
    • Monitor industry trends and regulations to recommend and implement best practices.
  • Program Development & Evaluation:
    • Create and execute strategies for health, safety, and environmental compliance across all operations, including construction sites, the mechanic shop, and quarry operations.
    • Lead incident investigations, analyze data, and implement prevention programs to reduce risks.
    • Build documentation, such as templates and forms, to standardize safety practices across the organization.
  • Team Development & Training:
    • Mentor and coach the Health and Safety team to ensure consistent execution of safety programs.
    • Facilitate training for all employees, from regulatory requirements to site-specific topics, ensuring compliance at all levels.
    • Oversee onboarding safety protocols for new employees and liaise with HR to identify training needs.
  • Risk Management & Reporting:
    • Conduct regular site visits to assess safety conditions and compliance.
    • Track and present health and safety statistics, trends, and recommendations to senior management.
    • Administer WSIB claims and oversee safe return-to-work plans, providing guidance to managers on minimizing lost time injuries.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Serve as a key advocate for employee safety and wellness, fostering a strong safety culture.
    • Oversee and provide direction for the Locates Coordinator and Environmental Compliance team.
    • All other duties as required.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum 10 years in a senior health and safety role within construction.
  • Professional designation (e.g., CRSP, CSP, NCSO) and certifications in WSIB JHSC (Part 1 & 2) and Surface Mining Common Core.
  • Proven experience leading COR 2020 audits and implementing OHS programs.
  • Expertise in OH&S laws, regulations, and best practices.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office; bilingual in French is an asset.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites.
