Key activities:
The Health and Safety Coordinator (HSC) acts as a leader in the organisation on all aspects of Health and Safety by providing subject matter expertise, advice and guidance to management and various committees on Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) best practices and requirements.


Well versed with the OHS legislative requirements, the incumbent is responsible for the development, maintenance and on-going management of all safety programs and policies at the National Arts Centre (NAC). In working with various internal and external stakeholders, the incumbent ensures the compliance of all safety programs, i.e., H&S Workplace Inspections, Emergency Manual, including related evacuation plans, Lockdown, etc.


The Health and Safety Coordinator must effectively communicate, engage, and build relationships with employees, unions, and management to support the NAC employee safety program initiatives, safety training activities and accommodation practices for return to work of employees after an injury or illness.
The incumbent is responsible for all aspects of workplace incidents and investigations, from the investigation and reporting to the management of the return-to-work process.
The incumbent is also responsible for the management, tracking and compliance of all safety training programs (WHMIS, Working at Heights, Fork-Lift training, Electrical safety, etc.) as well as sourcing and on-going contract management with suppliers.


Required qualifications:
• Certificate or Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety or other related fields of study;
• Minimum of five years experience in a related Occupational Health and Safety field;
• Extensive knowledge of federal and provincial OHS legislation, regulations, and injury compensation;
• Knowledge and experience working with various OHS risk assessment methods such as Job Hazard Analysis, Job Safety Analysis, Ergonomic Assessments, Job Demand Analysis, Hazard Risk Assessment, etc.,
• Extensive experience in developing, administrating, and communicating OHS program policies and procedures,
• Experience in developing, delivering, or sourcing OHS training and awareness sessions,
• Ability to identify risks, assess the risks to develop a safe and healthy workplace and provide recommended solutions to operational situations,
• Ability to provide OHS advice and guidance to directors, managers, and union representatives,
• Fluently bilingual in both official languages both verbal and written with strong communication and interpersonal skills,
• Valid First Aid / CPR certification.
