Full-time One (1) year NOHFC Internship appointment until April 30, 2026

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for equipping the mobile lab with relevant equipment and tools for successfully completing a variety of field studies in the area of occupational safety and health. They will drive the mobile lab to worksites, engage with workers onsite, disseminate knowledge in a variety of mediums, perform recruitment speeches, and answer questions related to health and safety. Working alongside CROSH researchers, they will be responsible for outfitting participants with equipment or wearable technology and taking other relevant physiological data, and handling the proper pre-processing, storage and management of those data.

Once back in the laboratory environment, the field research intern will be trained in methods of data processing and analysis using specialized software available in the CROSH workplace simulator. The candidate will be expected to perform data manipulations using coding languages, and produce summaries for reports or research purposes.

Field Intern recipients are expected to live in Sudbury, Canada for the duration of the position and will have the opportunity to participate in the intellectual life of the CROSH and larger Laurentian University community.

  • Prepare the mobile lab for deployment;
  • Operate the mobile lab while in the field;
  • Perform onsite subject recruitment following ethical procedures;
  • Use the provided equipment to take human physiological measurements and collect data onsite;
  • Complete data processing and managing tasks in the field and lab;
  • Prepare data visualizations and finding summaries for research team purposes;
  • Perform knowledge transfer exchange activities in the field and academic settings; and
  • Meet with workplace partners to establish testing procedures and expectations.

Other responsibilities based on the fellow's interests and CROSH's research agenda, could include:

  • Developing other CROSH KTE initiatives;
  • Planning CROSH workshops, events, webinars, or roundtables, in conjunction with CROSH staff; and
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in a relevant discipline (engineering, human factors);
  • Working knowledge of MATLAB or LabView, or another basic programming language;
  • Preference will be given to applicants who hold a valid DZ license;and
  • Applicants must be able to communicate in English (read; write; speak).

This is a 12-month position. The rate of pay is $29/hour and for 35 hours per week. The successful applicant will be required to start on or before May 1st, 2025.

The official University hours of operation shall be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, during, and including, the months from September to April, and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m Monday through Friday during and including May to August., amounting to thirty-three and three-quarter (33.75) hours per week.
