Job Description:

The Director, Compensation is a key member of the global compensation team with a focus on managing compensation initiatives and programs across Sun Life Canada. The Director, Compensation will proactively identify and drive initiatives to improve compensation programs in alignment with our compensation philosophy and in support of business objectives. This role will oversee broad-based employee compensation programs, manage mid-large sized projects across Sun Life Canada and/or country of Canada, and provide dedicated compensation advisory support for assigned divisions. The role also has shared accountability for the oversight and governance of sales incentive compensation for Sun Life Canada.

What will you do?

  • Champions Sun Life's compensation philosophy and partners across HR and the business to ensure programs are designed and delivered in alignment with Compensation, Total Rewards, and HR objectives.
  • Builds strong relationships with HR Business Partners and business leaders. Provides consultation and partnership to identify needs and priorities related to broad-based compensation and sales compensation. This includes conducting market research, internal analysis, establishing design principles, building design alternatives, outlining implications through modeling, determining employee and cost impacts, and creating communication and transition plans.
  • Is accountable for project management and leading the annual cycle for SL Canada business group and providing compensation advisory support for assigned client groups.
  • Leads the design and maintenance of Canada compensation structures to ensure ongoing market competitiveness.
  • Plays a lead role in sales compensation for Sun Life Canada.
  • Assesses sales incentive eligibility based on job function and role in sales achievement.
  • Consults on sales plan design ensuring plans promote client centric sales and have balanced designs to manage against conflict of interest.
  • Manages ad hoc sales compensation interventions including retention, guarantees, and special bonuses.
  • Involved in overseeing sales compensation processes and governance in partnership with AVP and other stakeholders.
  • Consults with HR Business Partners and Business Leaders on compensation issues and solutions ranging from individual employee recommendations to unique compensation program interventions (e.g., retention programs, one-time payments, off-cycle increases, etc.).
  • Influences the direction and designs innovative solutions for compensation programs by understanding Sun Life's business and utilizing best practice knowledge.
  • Stays abreast of and ensures compliance with regulatory and market related topics including pay equity and living wage.
  • Supports organization design and job design work. Facilitates Leader conversations to identify and scope work, clarify and articulate accountabilities, and evaluate job levels.
  • Responsible for attracting, retaining, and developing a small team of talented compensation professionals. Passionate about developing people through coaching, continuous feedback, career development and performance management.

What do you need to succeed?

  • Relevant experience in a similar role is required. CCP designation preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of compensation practices and theory including experience in broad based compensation and sales compensation. Financial Services industry experience and prior people management experience desired.
  • Excellent interpersonal and consulting skills. Proven ability to build effective partnerships within HR partners and Business leaders in order to effectively collaborate and recommend compensation solutions to solve business challenges.
  • Strong communication skills including the ability to effectively communicate complex concepts in simple terms to various audiences. Excellent written communication skills required.
  • Advanced Excel skills and spreadsheet analysis. Strong Power Point skills with the ability to build and deliver audience-specific presentations.
  • Exceptional analytical, problem solving and financial modeling skills, with an eye for detail and accuracy.
  • Strong project management and planning skills including the ability to lead, plan, organize, and resource complex assignments.
  • Experience with mergers and acquisitions a plus.
  • Ability to organize and accomplish objectives independently and through others.

The Base Pay range is for the primary location for which the job is posted. It may vary depending on the work location of the successful candidate or other factors. In addition to Base Pay, eligible Sun Life employees participate in various incentive plans, payment under which is discretionary and subject to individual and company performance. Certain sales focused roles have sales incentive plans based on individual or group sales results.
