Your Role on our Team: Reporting to the Health and Safety Manager, the Health and Safety Specialist role is focused on promoting the highest standards of health & safety throughout the organization by implementing, evaluating, promoting and continuously improving Minto's integrated health and safety program. The Health and Safety Specialist must be enthusiastic, resourceful and detail-oriented. The position requires prioritizing tasks, exercising good judgment, delivering high quality work, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and demonstrating excellent customer service.

In this role, you will:

  • Partner with and support Minto Properties Inc. and Minto Apartment REIT in the implementation and on-going management of the Health & Safety program.
  • Ensure compliance with the Corporate Health & Safety Program for all employees and properties in the Greater Toronto Area.
  • Promote the highest standards of Health & Safety.
  • Provide support to property operations (~ 60%) and industrial construction projects (~ 40%).
  • Inspect properties and projects to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation and Minto safe work procedures. Maintain consistent on-site presence for all sites.
  • Utilize necessary administrative procedures and evaluation tools (ie. audits) required to successfully execute all aspects of the Health & Safety program and regularly monitor the programs' effectiveness.
  • Ensure Minto Properties Inc. and Minto Apartment REIT is aware of any legislative changes or updates that may impact operations.
  • Ensure proactive and comprehensive review of Health & Safety program on a quarterly and annual basis. Review to include input from management, workers and the Health & Safety Committee(s)/Health and Safety Representative(s).
  • Work with major projects team to ensure compliance for new projects as well as participate in and support pre-start meetings with contractors.
  • Incorporate health and safety into operational practices and procedures.
  • Maintain incident (i.e. near misses) and injury records and monitor trends to eliminate hazards and improve controls.
  • Assist with the injury reporting procedures to ensure timely and accurate reporting. In the event of an injury, assist with early and safe return to work.
  • Ensure Health and Safety Committees are held and operating effectively.
  • Ensure employees are compliant for health and safety training for basic compliance and any additional training that may pertain to the individual employee.
  • Maintain training records and identify gaps.
  • Ensure health and safety tasks are being completed as required and recorded (ie. mechanical device inspections).
  • May be required to provide training and/or safety talks to employees.
  • Investigate all injuries and incidents to prevent a recurrence and maintain records.
  • May be required to assist with maintaining and updating emergency response plans/procedures.
  • May be required to provide after-hours support in the event of an emergency.
  • Other duties within the scope, spirit, and purpose of the job, as requested by management.

We would like you to have:

Education:

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety.
  • A recognized health and safety designation is an asset.
  • Health and safety lead or internal auditor certification is an asset.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3-5 years of health and safety experience including program management and development.
  • Must have health and safety experience in the industrial and construction sectors.
  • Must have a good understanding of the various workplace roles and responsibilities.
  • Current certification in Standard First Aid.
  • Certified as a Joint Health and Safety Committee member is an asset.
  • Demonstrated abilities with Microsoft Office applications (particularly Word and Excel), Health and Safety software and LMS software.
  • Familiar with all applicable legislation pertaining to the work and facilities.

Specialized Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

  • Willing to assist with tasks that may be outside of the scope of work.
  • Approachable and diplomatic: relates well to all kinds of people and able to build strong relationships.
  • Ability to coach and provide effective feedback to all levels.
  • Experience in dealing with sensitive and/or confidential matters.
  • Able to facilitate solutions in difficult or stressful situations.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable vehicle.
