The St. Joseph's Health Centre Emergency Department at Unity Health Toronto serves a large and diverse population across the lifespan. Our busy ED serves over 100,000 patients per year. We are in the midst of a number of small-scale renovation projects to better support our staff to delivery high quality care to our community in our pediatric, ambulatory, acute, and resuscitation zones.

This is an exciting opportunity for an innovative, dynamic and solutions-oriented individual to draw upon their team-building and change management skills to help lead an inter-professional team in advancing the goals of the department and the strategic plan of the organization. You will be responsible for safety, quality, performance, and patient experience while ensuring roles, responsibilities, and functions continue to evolve to meet changing needs of our patients, staff, organization, and community. Your collaborative and engaging leadership style will support the team through the next phases of construction and renovation. Staff wellness will be a priority.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • As a member of the Emergency Department Leadership Team, you will be responsible for:
  • Developing, implementing and leading short and long-term plans which support and advance unit priorities
  • Hiring competent and qualified multi-professional personnel and coordinating an orientation program that will foster their success on the unit
  • Ensuring the provision of excellent care for patients
  • Managing, motivating and providing professional/clinical leadership to multi-generational/ inter-professional teams
  • Liaising and collaborating with physicians and physician leadership to support operations of clinical area(s) and organizational goals
  • Implementing processes to ensure the safe, effective and efficient delivery of excellent care to all patients and processes that support involving patients as collaborative partners
  • Supporting educational strategies to enhance staff knowledge with respect to professional nursing, health discipline, clinical, administrative staff practices and patient care
  • Performing planning, quality management and operations responsibilities, including implementing quality improvement and other initiatives in the Emergency Department
  • Collecting, analyzing and disseminating quality data to the team to promote continuous quality improvement
  • Maintaining a physical environment that promotes patient healing, supports staff in the delivery of safe patient care and meets fire and safety codes
  • Ensuring staff have the tools, equipment and resources required to do their work
  • Participating in special projects and corporate management responsibilities that support and advance Unity Health Toronto's goals and objectives
  • Maintaining accountability for planning and managing the department's financial resources
  • Networking and developing partnerships with internal and external agencies to meet the needs of the patient population
  • Planning, recruiting, coordinating, promoting, disciplining and terminating staff, as required
  • Developing/establishing work schedules that meet departmental needs, employment standards, and collective agreements
  • Conducting performance management responsibilities
  • Ensuring staff are meeting professional practice standards to ensure safe and high quality patient care
  • Identifying and managing employee issues/concerns, utilizing appropriate conflict resolution skill, while taking appropriate action to ensure matters are resolved in a fair and timely manner
  • Determining training needs and implementing training programs to improve staff performance
  • Preparing appropriate business plan documents in support of short and long term planning initiatives which supports clinical, financial and human resources needs for the clinical area(s)
  • Monitoring progress towards the achievement of goals at regular intervals and takes action, as required to ensure desired outcome is attained, using effective change management methodologies and leadership to influence change and innovation
  • Developing and implementing day to day operating policies, systems and procedures to contribute to organizational effectiveness
  • Managing the development, implementation, evaluation and maintenance of quality improvement initiatives which are in alignment with Unity Health Toronto's strategic plan, policies/procedures and standards
  • Monitoring, reviewing, acting upon and communicating resolution of patient and family feedback to improve patient/family engagement and experience
  • Maintaining professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of the latest trends in nursing, health disciplines and management field
  • Monitoring, reviewing, acting upon and communicating resolution of safety and learning reports
  • Contributing to corporate efforts and initiatives, as appropriate, to enhance Unity Health Toronto's mission, values and goals
  • Representing Unity Health Toronto and contributing to external community and government agencies
  • Representing Unity Health Toronto in the external community at conferences, workshops, etc.
  • Providing clinical consultation and leadership for corporate initiatives, e.g., operational readiness, internal/external disasters, emergency preparedness, etc.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Regulated Health Professional with a Master's Degree in Nursing/Health Discipline required
  • Registration in good standing with a regulatory college
  • Minimum five (5) years of clinical experience in an Emergency Department
  • Minimum 3 years of recent management experience or evidence of progressive leadership roles in a relevant health care field
  • Completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support (B.C.L.S.) program required
  • Current membership in a related professional interest group or association preferred
  • Completion of specialty specific certification program(s) relevant to respective clinical areas an asset
  • Strong leadership skills including demonstrated effectiveness with designing, planning, managing and change management
  • Previous project management experience and an ability to facilitate groups
  • Experience with labour relation issues (e.g. grievances, investigations, counseling)
  • Experience in facilitating, collaborating and negotiating effective resolution of human resource issues
  • Demonstrated ability to contribute to a positive learning culture and facilitate the achievement of evidence based quality care with optimal outcomes
  • Strong analytical and conceptual skills with the ability to analyze and utilize clinical and management data for planning purposes
  • Demonstrated excellent budgeting and financial management skills
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal, superior communication, coaching and team building skills that facilitate positive interactions among all members of the health care team
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to patient safety, best practice and innovation in patient care delivery
