Salary: $71.82 - $89.78 per hour, or $140,049 - $175,071 per year

St. Michael's Hospital, part of Unity Health Toronto, is a renowned academic health science center committed to providing exceptional patient care, advancing groundbreaking research, and training the next generation of healthcare professionals.

We are currently seeking a dedicated, highly skilled, and experienced Senior Medical Physicist with a specialization in Positron Emission Tomography (PET) and Computed Tomography (CT) technology to join our dynamic team on a full-time basis for our new PET-CT program. This program focuses on advanced research and clinical applications in cardiology, neurology, and oncology. The ideal candidate will have extensive expertise in PET-CT and will also take on corporate radiation safety functions, following a portfolio realignment in spring 2025.

The Senior Medical Physicist will participate in day-to-day clinical activities and provide leadership in clinical, educational, and research activities, and lead transformative change through implementation of new technology and processes.

Responsibilities

PET/CT Program Leadership

· An essential team member in the implementation and ongoing development of the PET-CT program.

· Engage in clinical services, education, and research and development.

· Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support clinical and research initiatives in cardiology, neurology, and oncology and elevate PET services.

· Develop, implement, and optimize PET-CT imaging protocols to enhance diagnostic accuracy and image quality and optimize radiation dosimetry and patient care.

· Participate, develop, administer, and evaluate the quality assurance program for PET-CT equipment, technologies, and procedures.

· Provide technical expertise and support for PET-CT scans, including equipment procurement, patient dosimetry, image acquisition and reconstruction, and data analysis.

· Perform ongoing testing for performance and safety standards pertinent to radiological imaging equipment, ensuring that equipment meets the standards set by regulatory agencies and equipment accreditation agencies. Ensure that imaging equipment is operating according to accepted standards of practice for image quality and radiation safety.

· Stay current with advancements in PET-CT technology and integrate new techniques and methodologies into the program.

· Educate and train medical staff, including radiologists, technologists, medical physics residents, and researchers, on PET-CT imaging principles and best practices.

Research and Development

· Conduct and supervise research and development projects.

· Collaborate with researchers to design and implement clinical trials and research studies utilizing PET-CT technology.

· Assist in securing grant funding for research projects and contribute to scholarly publications.

· Provide data analysis support for research studies, including statistical analysis and interpretation of imaging results.

· Foster partnerships with academic and industry leaders to advance PET-CT technology, radiopharmaceutical development, and clinical applications.

· Participates in the commissioning, decommissioning, and acceptance testing of radioactive facilities and equipment.

Corporate Radiation Safety

· Transition to the role of Corporate Radiation Safety Officer, managing the radiation safety program and ensuring compliance with CNSC and HARP regulations.

· Liaise with the CNSC and manage radiation safety licenses, including applications, renewals, and amendments.

· Assist in facility planning and the design of radiation facilities, including the structural radiation shielding design.

· Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of CNSC regulations and ensure all practices comply with current standards.

· Develop and implement radiation safety policies and procedures to protect patients, staff, and the public.

· Investigate and report any radiation incidents or exposures, and implement corrective actions as necessary.

· Conduct regular audits and inspections of radiation facilities and equipment.

· Provide training and education on radiation safety practices to Unity Health staff.

Qualifications

· Masters (MSc) or doctorate (PhD) degree in Medical Physics, Health & Radiation Physics, Radiological Physics, or a related field.

· Specialization in PET-CT technology, with extensive experience in cardiology, neurology, and oncology imaging, preferred.

· Certification by the Canadian College of Physicists in Medicine (CCPM) or equivalent; additional certification in nuclear cardiology is preferred.

· At least 5 years of experience in medical physics, with proven expertise in leading PET-CT programs and radiation safety.

· Comprehensive knowledge, understanding, and application of mathematics, computer algorithms, artificial intelligence, and machine learning.

· Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of PET-CT imaging principles, technologies, and clinical applications.

· Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of radiation protection philosophies, procedures, equipment, and techniques.

· Strong background in radiation safety and regulatory compliance, preferably with experience in CNSC licensing; Radiation Safety Officer certification is preferred.

· Proven track record in research and development, including publication in peer-reviewed journals.

· Ability to manage multiple tasks and prioritize work to meet deadlines and objectives.

· Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team.

· Excellent problem recognition, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills
