Reports To: Manager, Life and Disability Best Practice

Work Arrangements: This is a hybrid role. You will work in our office in Waterloo, ON a minimum of two (2) assigned, consecutive days every other week, plus a fifth (5th) assigned day per month. You are welcome to work from the office more than the minimum requirement and there may be some roles that are required to work in our office more than the minimum requirement.



The Opportunity: Equitable is looking for a Group Life Claims and Disability Payment Specialist. The primary responsibilities of this role will focus on disability claim payments.

What you will be doing:

  • Provide optimal customer service and ensure all types of Life and Disability benefit payments are accurate and issued correctly.
  • Calculate benefits payable and make necessary adjustments throughout the disability claim process, including offsets for CPP Disability Benefits and Workers Compensation Benefits.
  • Complete rehab earnings calculations for both STD & LTD disability benefits, incorporating applicable consumer price index (CPI) factors.
  • Manage the overpayment reimbursement process, including establishing repayment plans.
  • Process lump sum payments for claims or litigation as directed by the DCS or Litigation Specialist.
  • Manage EFT rejections and stale dated cheques
  • Resolve any payment issues received from the Plan Member or Plan Sponsor within department quality standards.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on the annual tax project, issuing T4 & Rev1 tax slips.
  • Perform annual cost of living allowance (COLA) increase calculations for LTD benefits.
  • Evaluate medical, functional, employment, and contractual information to determine ongoing eligibility for extended duration and waiver of premium claims.
  • Evaluate claim requirements based on policy provisions to make timely and accurate decisions on Life, Dependent Life, Optional Life, AD&D, Living Benefit, and Creditor Life claims.
  • Work collaboratively with reinsurers to ensure their requirements are met for claims which exceed the reinsurance limit and to ensure Equitable is reimbursed appropriately.
  • Review and action monthly control reports.
  • Maintain well-documented, clear and concise files.
  • Identify and participate in process improvement opportunities.
  • De-escalate volatile emotional situations mostly by phone.
  • Provide miscellaneous claim support as needed.
