Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is looking for a highly motivated person to fulfill a full-time (40h/week) Intern, Industrial Hygienist - Safety position in Montreal, QC or Toronto, ON from May- Aug 2025.

Job Summary

The Intern, Industrial Hygiene - Safety is responsible for understanding the techniques used in industrial hygiene to collect and evaluate data, as well as apply regulatory and professional standards to protect employees and the community. The role is performed in collaboration with the Industrial Hygiene team by conducting workplace monitoring for noise and various airborne hazards across operational departments. After an initial orientation, the incumbent works with supervisors and Safety team members on their projects, provides daily or weekly reports on the progress and the challenges incurred.

Major Responsibilities

  • Conduct noise monitoring during locomotive train operations and yard activities
  • Perform air monitoring for silica, diesel particulate matter, and lead as per operational department needs
  • Evaluate workplace task biomechanics for Transportation, Engineering and Mechanical departments using Soter Analytics Video Software
  • Test various biomechanical improvements, evaluate using Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) applications and provide best practice recommendations
  • Provide coaching and feedback to various groups on proper biomechanics
  • Develop education materials based on industrial hygiene assessments and employee feedback
  • Evaluate CN's compliance with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) Hazard Communication program or Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (COHSR) Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System program
  • Perform spot inspections of hazardous materials inventories and update as appropriate
  • Resolve if the Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are available in the system and update them accordingly

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • The role requires occasional travel (30%) within Canada and the United States (U.S.)

Education

  • Minimum 3 years completed of a Bachelor's Degree in an Occupational Safety and Health Field or Science (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Working towards a Master's Degree in an Occupational Safety and Health field*

*Any experience/education/skills/knowledge for these above would be considered as an asset
