Don’t be mislead by the name—Pinkslipparty.ca is very serious about being a place for recruiters and candidates to meet. And it’s no time to be gloomy, as events are held in relaxed surroundings! Following the success of a first party held in Toronto, the site, whose aim is to make job-hunting fun, is doing it again and organizing two events. On June 8, 2009, between 6 and 9 p.m., Montreal and Toronto’s professional communities will have the opportunity to mingle and network. The former event will be held at Cavalli restaurant, and the latter at Globe Bistro. Earnings will be donated to Project Winter Survival, a non-profit organization that provides homeless people with a winter survival kit.

Hiring demand in Toronto suburbs down 30 % because of the recession

The number of job ads for the suburban GTA dropped by more than 30% in the first quarter of 2009 compared to the same period of 2008, according to a recent report by VicinityJobs.ca. The study was designed to measure the impact of the recession on hiring demand, and analyzed almost 200,000 ads for job openings posted by major online job boards and community newspapers between January 2008 and March 2009.

 

 

Aerojobs.ca now part of Workopolis NicheNetwork

AeroJobs.ca, a Canadian job site specializing in aerospace, aeronautics and aviation jobs, has been part of Workopolis NicheNetwork since May 1. For the occasion, Aerojobs invites employers to post their jobs for free until June 20, 2009.

Canadian employment gains in April

According to Statistics Canada’s Labour Force Survey, employment made gains in April, chiefly due to an increase in self-employment. The number of self-employed workers increased by 37,000, while the number of public and private sector employees remained constant. Job gains were made in information, culture and recreation (+17,000); business, building and other support services (+15,000); “other services” (+14,000); and agriculture (+9,000).

Canadian workers stressed by economic crisis

A large number of Canadian workers are particularly stressed by the recession, according to the results of the annual Desjardins Financial Security Heath is Cool! survey. Some of the results: 83% of respondents said they are paying more attention to their spending, 43% are worried about losing their jobs, and about 30% have experienced anxiety, headaches, muscle pain or other physical ailments.

 

When contributing to a good cause and training go hand-in-hand

Paddles up! The Easter Seals Challenge 2009, organized by Easter Seals Québec and the Team Building Agency, is a combined fundraising and team-building activity for Quebec companies. The event will be held Thursday, September 3rd, at the Parc Jean-Drapeau Olympic Basin and will feature team-building workshops and friendly dragon-boat races, a great catalyst for team communication, collaboration, trust and creativity. The money raised will go to Easter Seals Quebec for its work in the integration of disabled people into the community.

New workplace reality show

Over the coming months, U.S. broadcaster Fox will air a new reality show titled “Someone’s Gotta Go.” Like Loft Story and Star Academy, the concept features the dropping of participants, but this time in the workplace. Specifically, employees of a small company going through rough times will be asked to choose which of their coworkers to lay off. The show's host is a human resources consultant who will offer advice to participating companies. And to spice things up, employees will have access to all of their colleagues’ files. The only restriction: they won’t be able to fire their boss!

U.S. executive compensation revised downward

According to a survey of outside directors conducted in March and April 2009 by consulting firm Watson Wyatt, 63% of directors think that American companies need to change their executive compensation programs in light of the financial crisis.
Thirty-four percent of directors polled said their companies have already reduced executive pay (salaries, target bonuses and/or benefits) with another 6% planning to do so in the next six months. Moreover, these changes are permanent for a large number of companies.
