1. State Street, the American currency broker, will create 100 new jobs in Montreal: it has just renewed its agreement with the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec.

2. Within three years, 100 jobs will be created in Greater Montreal: the French group Astek, specialist in information and scientific and technical engineering systems, has decided to set itself up in the metropolitan region.

3. In the oil field, after obtaining a major contract for offshore supply vessels in New Brunswick, Atlantic Towing Limited will be creating 100 jobs.

4. Meanwhile, at the other end of the country in British Columbia, Microsoft has announced the opening of a new center of excellence by the end of 2015, in the heart of downtown Vancouver. An initiative that will create 100 jobs.


5. Good news for some 150 Bombardier employees in La Pocatière, who were laid off last fall: the planes and trains manufacturer will hire them back as of this summer to build Azur cars for the Montreal Transit Society.

LAYOFFS

 

1. As part of their restructuring plans, Wal-Mart Canada has laid off 750 people nationwide. The company referred to it as the "deployment of a new management structure."

2. The fashion chain boutique Jacob announced earlier this month that it will permanently cease its activities. More than 100 stores will be closing and 1,500 employees across the province will have to find other employment as a result of this bankruptcy.

3. Following the closing of its factory in Cornwall, Canlyte Phillips, a manufacturer of light bulbs and fluorescent lamps, has thus put more than 200 employees out of work. A decision designed to coordinate production elsewhere in North America.

5. A hundred people will lose their jobs as a result of The Gazette’s decision to be printed by Transcontinental. PostMedia, which owns the Montreal English-language newspaper, counts on thus making significant savings.
