Temporary work in good shape
According to the National Staffing & Recruiting Industry Association, the Canadian Recruitment Index was at 125 in October, an increase of 8% over October 2011 and 11% compared to September 2012. This index is calculated on the basis of hours billed for temporary work from large staffing agencies. October is traditionally a good month so these positive results were expected, but it’s especially the length of time that is significant: for the thirteenth consecutive month the index has been above 100. These high volumes are confirming the good health of temporary work and the activity stands at higher levels than before the economic crisis.
Manitoba sensitive to parental suffering
Manitoba has proposed amendments intended to create new leave for parents of children affected by a serious illness or parents whose child has gone missing or been killed criminally. The amendments include:
- Up to 37 weeks of absence to care for a seriously ill child,
- Up to 104 weeks of absence after criminal decease of a child,
- Up to 52 weeks of absence after criminal disappearance of a child.
To benefit from this leave, the employee must have at least 30 days of seniority in the company and the child be less than 18 years old.
