In this book, authors Mickael Burchell and Jennifer Robin, consultants with the Institute, discuss the various aspects of the work environment, and meticulously analyze what really matters to employees. Based on 25 years of case studies and scores of employee anecdotes and quotes, some of the success factors include workplace camaraderie, recognition by managers and seeing the potential for a long-term career. Burchell and Robin have studied what the top companies do and come up with a non-exhaustive list of best practices. For example, Microsoft always express its long-term commitment to new hires in order to build trust, and at Marriott, night-shift employees are treated to an “appreciation” breakfast.
