“Making diversity a priority in Canadian organizations is imperative—not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it is critical to the future success of our businesses and our economy.” This affirmation introduces the white paper published by Deloitte Canada in early July devoted to the issue of integrating people with disabilities into the workplace.
The 20-page document is the result of the discussions held during diversity round tables organized by Deloitte in March. Starting with Halifax, the round tables then visited six other cities (Toronto, Ottawa, Saskatoon, Montreal, Edmonton and Vancouver), to discuss the role of businesses with respect to the challenges faced by handicapped people.
The outcome of these meetings: People with disabilities are struggling to be incorporated into the workplace. In light of this unfortunate reality, along with the increasing lack of workers to fill positions, businesses have the duty to make a greater effort to make room for them. The white paper contains various recommendations to help employers take action.
Some examples of potential solutions:
– build employee awareness about the advantages of diversity
– focus exclusively on candidates’ skills
– offer flexible work hours
