Work atmosphere is number 1 asset for attracting talent

A survey shows that a good work atmosphere is even more important to Canadians than salary and job security when seeking an employer. Taking stock of what drives talented professionals, from quality relationships to flexibility of obligations.

According to a survey conducted by ICMA International and sponsored by Randstad Canada, work atmosphere is key for attracting top talent.

Results of the 7,000-person survey indicate the most important factor Canadian jobseekers are looking for in a potential employer is a pleasant working atmosphere (60%), more so than a high salary (56%), job security (53%) and good work-life balance (48%).

This means that Canadian workers and job seekers want to be a part of an organization that can benefit them on both a personal and professional level.

Improving work atmosphere

Emphasis can be put on measures ensuring workers have good relations with colleagues and management, a pleasant work environment conductive to concentration and exchange, flexible hours, team-building activities and employee recognition programs. In practice, there is a lot companies can do to provide the conditions deemed essential by today’s workers.

In today’s tight job market—with stiff competition to attract and retain qualified employees—supervisory staff must also do their bit in contributing to work atmosphere. Team leaders and managers who take the time to understand their employees’ expectations and needs are more likely to be rewarded for their investment with a better climate and increased productivity during work hours, as well as greater attractiveness to potential employees.
